Hurricane Airs it Out During Scrimmage @ Parkersburg South

No one was quite sure what to expect from the Redskins offense this season, this morning we caught a glimpse of what may be in store. Perhaps answering questions he had himself, Coach Jeremy Taylor let his two quarterbacks air it out a bit more than he normally is accustom.

With Junior Nathan Roy and Sophomore Austin Womack in a battle for the starting QB position, both had ample opportunities to impress Taylor. Roy got the first crack at the South defense and drove the Skins deep down field until the final play of the 10 play set was knocked away from Dakota Williams in the end zone.

Womack took the reins on the 2nd Redskin possession and threw a 43 yard TD strike to Dakota Williams, who beat one on one coverage. On the drive Womack was 3-6 for 32 yards.

On the day Womack (11-17-157-1-1), and Roy (6-11-146-0-1) combined for over 300 yards passing.

If there was no apparent winner of the QB battle one thing was certain, whoever is under center will have many weapons at his disposal. Beside Williams (2-44-td), Curon Cordon (5-135) showed Hurricane fans a bit of what he is capable of, making a juggling catch of a Roy pass and sprinting for a 70 yard gain. Add Abel Cunningham (4-78), Bo Adkins (2-22) and Gage Truman (1-17) to the mix and the Skins have speed and depth at receiver that they have not enjoyed in years.

Christian Hill lead the rushing attack (4-18-1 td). Payton Lunsford, Cordon and Isiah Williams also carried the ball, and Gage Truman ended the scrimmage with a 40 yard run (no one seemed to care that it would have been called back on a late flag).

Taylor was pleased with the play of his new look offensive line. Chase Ross, Dalton Geter, Cole Runion, Nick Goad, and Michael Watson provided the protection necessary for Hurricane to toss 30 passes. The only negative plays resulted from a few errant snaps.

Defensively the Redskins 1st unit looked to be in mid-season form as Parkersburg South managed just 37 yards on their first 20 plays, an average of less than 2 yards per play.

When the teams were playing down and distance later in the contest, South started on the Skins 32 yard line after a lost fumble. The subsequent drive resulted in a negative 25 yards.

J.T. Cooper lead the Redskins with 7 tackles and had the hit of the day, drawing raves from the dedicated Redskins fans who made the trip up I-77. On an attempted screen pass Cooper crushed the would be receiver a split second after the ball arrived.

Charlie Womack had 6 stops and several passes defended. Payton Lunsford, Michael Watson, Tommy Butler, and Kryzstof Kudlak had 3 tackles each. Matthew Hartleben had 3 sacks as he and Steven Shine (sack and pass blocked) provided consistent QB pressure. Cameron Kimble had a interception and Barrett Dudding a fumble recovery.

Defensive Coordinator Pratt pleased with the overall effort praised Noah Craddock specifically for his tackling. "that was the best his tackled in 2 years."

NOTES:

Kryzstof Kudlak recovered a fumble in the end zone for a Hurricane TD. Michael Watson, Bomani Brooks, Tommy Butler, and Chase Lauerman each registered sacks. Garrett Green injured an ankle on his first play at Center and did not return. Dylan Bradford caught a 20 yard pass, and Ryan Moses had 2 receptions. Hayden Alford had 2 tackles on defense and was also 1-2 passing. Parkersburg South were excellent hosts and fed the Redskins after the scrimmage.

Sounds of the Game: After Steven Shine had wrecked havoc on the South, and showed blitz one of the Patriots yelled "Watch THAT guy" drawing laughs from the bleachers and Redskin defenders.

At one point Payton Lunsford demonstrating his leadership on the field yelled out to a teammate "stop complaining it's 3rd and 40."
