June Practice ends with White topping Red 75-68 during Red/White game

Football returned to Redskin stadium Friday night, well sort of. The Hurricane Redskins ended their 3 week June practice session with a Red vs. White game. In a fun game that was also competitive, the White team prevailed 75-68 in a game that featured players coaching, coaches officiating, and Coach Taylor announcing from the Press Box.

The White scored on the first offensive play as Nathan Roy, a St. Albans transfer, hit Curon Cordon down the sideline. Cordon, who we featured on a blog when he joined the Redskins form South Charleston earlier this year, did the rest as he caught the pass against double coverage and sprinted into the end-zone. The Redskins hope to see more of this explosiveness from Cordon during the season. He would show his new fans more of what they have to look forward to as the game proceeded.

The Red offense would strike back.

Austin Womack whose 2 favorite receivers on this night, Steven Shine and J.T. Cooper, did not catch a single pass for the Redskins last season, showed Coach Taylor what they may be able to do on this side of the ball.

This time it was Shine's chance to beat double coverage on a nifty Touchdown reception.

However this would be the only time the Red squad would dent the end zone against the White's Defense. Perhaps one of the top plays for the White "D" came early in the game as Charlie Womack stuffed Shine on a nice solo tackle on an end around. After the play Shawn Lark serving as the White Coach laughed "that's why you dont run lineman!"

The Red Coaching staff consisted of Cam Patterson, Noah Craddock, and Tommy Butler. This is a trio that Coach Taylor certainly needs on the field when the season starts, not necessarily helping him coach. These 3 looked certainly looked the part, but had no answer for Cordon.

Cordon was directly involved in the last 2 TDS of the contest. He took a short pass from Roy and lateraled the ball back to Bo Adkins, on loan from the Redskins baseball team, Adkins showed HIS speed taking the pitch the last 40 yards and using a cut back to get into the end zone. Bo would also have a 48 yard reception later in the game, and should prove valuable to the Skins this season.

Cordon saved his best for last on a dazzling TD in the 2nd half. He took a pitch bolted downfield used several cutbacks to make defenders miss, kept his balance by dropping his hand to the turf, used another cutback and left a few diving defenders in his wake as he totaling 85 yards on the score.

The Redskins and their fans are thrilled that he will be wearing Red and White this season rather than Orange and Black.

The night's remaining points were all amassed during kicking contest between quarters.

The competition featured a couple battles that will continue through August prior to the Redskins choosing their place kicker and punter. During the punting portion of the game Cole Bumgarner and Anthony Halkias took center stage.

Points were awarded when lineman fielded the punts cleanly. Michael Watson, Hayden Alford, Steven Shine and Cole Runion did their best in this role, with Watson the most effective.

Twice during the night the placekickers got a chance to show their stuff as Bumgarner and Tim McCutchen, a transfer from North Carolina hitting from as far as 45 yards away.
